アイナメ（Hexagrammos otakii）に良く似ています。アイナメとの違いは尾鰭の形で，本種は尾鰭が扇形で，アイナメは尾鰭の中央部が陥入します。また，側線の本数がクジメでは1本，アイナメでは5本という違いがあります。側線の本数はクジメを他のアイナメ属と区別する最も顕著な特徴で，尾鰭での区別が曖昧なときは，側線で区別するのが確実です。
